FAQ

General Questions about the Web site

  1. Why can't I get to the entire site? (The links do not all work)

We are trying very hard to make the site safe for existing member info while still being accessible for potential new members who might find the site by searching through Google or yahoo for example.

One way to do that is by making only some of the pages like the home page and calendar page available to everyone while making other pages only available to registered members. So, please register for the web site to access the other member pages.

  2. Why am I listed as a limited member? I have completed the entire registration process.

There may be a bit of a delay between registering and being able to access the member pages since one of the administrators must first read the registration e-mail and change your status to full member.

You will also need to be a paid current member of NEW to access member pages.

You could just contact one of the administrators to let them know you have registered because then we could by-pass the gmail notification and make the change.

If you choose to not give your first and last name in your profile, there may be some problems with verification of your membership. The procedure for anyone who registers for the website is for the webmaster to forward the information to the membership VP for verification. If there is no last name given in the profile all we have is the e-mail address. If the e-mail address does not easily identify you as a member, the membership VP then sends information as to how to join NEW. This will delay verification of membership and leave you at limited membership status.

One way around giving more information in your profile than you feel comfortable, would always to send the webmaster an e-mail directly telling her you have registered for the site. Then she can verify membership and immediately changed your status to member.

  3. I changed my e-mail address and now want to change the e-mail address in my Member profile for log-In

It really is not difficult to change the e-mail but how to do it requires a bit of digging. So I will give you step by step directions to insure I do not lose you.
    1. Log into webs with the original e-mail address you used when you set up your profile.
    2. The next page should come up and there will be a tiny icon of a person and your username (may be e-mail or whatever name you put into your profile.) Click on the username.
    3. This should open your profile page. On the left side of the page about halfway down there is ACTIONS and under it a link to edit profile Click on that link.
    4. That will open a new windowm manage account. Across the top of the Manage Account are a series of tabs. Go to the the Edit Account Tab.
    5. The first line will be the e-mail address you used to register for the site. Click on the change button and add your new e-mail address. Click on the submit button on the bottom and your e-mail address will be changed.
  4. Why won't the link in my registration e-mail connect me back to the NEW web site?

If your e-mail firewall does not allow the direct click, try cut and pasting it into your browser.

Keep in mind when you join a group:

    • People may see when you join a public or closed group or that you're a member of that group, like in News Feed or search.

    • When someone adds you to a public or closed group, others may see that you've been invited (ex: in News Feed or search). Once you visit a group you're invited to, you'll become a member and other people may see that you joined.

General Computer Information

  1. How do I avoid viruses and spam?

Nothing can prevent viruses and spam completely so you need to practice "safe computing".

One step is using a good password.  That is one which includes upper and lower case letters and number.

Do not just forward messages to everyone in your address book if you receive something from someone else.  The e-mail addresses of the people who sent you the message and everyone they sent the message to and whoever forwarded the message to them are are listed.  This leaves all of you open to spammers who can then access that information.

If you really want to forward something to others, copy just the applicable text and paste it in a new e-mail.  To further protect those people you send the message or link to from spam, blind copy the e-mail addresses.

Often messages that have been forwarded multiple times specifically ask you to pass the word to all your friends.  This should alert you to a possible hoax email or even something more dangerous.  You could look on the symantek.com website or snopes.com to see whether the e-mail is even true before you pass the word along.  At the very least the hoax e-mails tend to create extra traffic on the internet and fill up your friends e-mail boxes.  The more dangerous e-mails contain bots, viruses etc that can threaten your computer's safety.

Lastly, get good firewall protection and update your virus definitions often.  Weekly is not too often.

  2. Are there any rules on creating a password?

Computer geeks will tell you the safest password contains upper and lower case letters and maybe some numbers. Many people make a password something easily remembered . If you do not put a lot of personal info into the profile, the password can be easier than if there is financial info connected to that password. Another idea would be to set up a separate e-mail account just for sites like ours.

  3. How much information should I put in my profile?

We are trying very hard to make the site safe for existing member info while still being accessible for potential new members who might find the site by searching through Google or yahoo for example.

One way to do that is by making only some of the pages available to everyone while making all the other pages only available to registered members.

The page with the members picture is available to limited members. We cannot make it much more private.  This is not within our control

So you may not want to put much personal info on it. Your user name and e-mail address is really all you need. I uploaded a picture because someone from our group thought it made the group look "shady" with the automatic female profile picture.

If you choose to not give your first and last name in your profile, however, there may be some problems with verification of your membership.
